The first election of the council was in 1964 as a shadow authority under the London Government Act 1963, before it came into its powers on 1 April 1965. The Labour Party has retained control throughout the borough's existence. Since 2006 the party has held all the seats on the council.

Election Results

Elections were originally held on a three yearly cycle, and there were also 8 aldermen chosen by the councillors with a six-year term of office. Changes made under the Local Government Act 1972 came into effect in 1978 with the abolition of aldermen and the change to a four year electoral cycle.
