Ethel Maud Newman née Walters (born 1887).

Born in Woolwich, she was the daughter of Frederick Walters, a worker at the Royal Arsenal, and Ann Elizabeth née Moss. In 1909 she married James Newman, an elementary school teacher.

Labour Party councillor in the London County Council 1934 Alderman 1939 - 1949, appointed in place of Hamilton, 14 March 1939. Elected as councillor 13 March 1946 Woolwich, West 1949 Woolwich East (UK Parliament constituency.

Vice Chairman London County Council 1945 – 1946

Member of Woolwich Borough Council.

In December 1939 appointed a member of the Central Price Regulation Committee [1]. Awarded OBE in 1944.
