There have been two parliamentary constituencies named Stepney, each returning one member to the House of Commons. The first existed from 1885-1918 and the second from 1950-February 1974.

Members of Parliament[]

MPs 1885–1918[]

The constituency was created by the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885 and was formally known as the Stepney Division of the Parliamentary Borough of Tower Hamlets (or Tower Hamlets, Stepney). It comprised the Centre, West and South wards of the parish of Mile End Old Town.

In 1918 the constituencies in the County of London were realigned to the boundaries of the Metropolitan Boroughs that had been created in 1900. The area became part of the new Stepney, Mile End constituency.

MPs 1950–1974[]

The Representation of the People Act 1948 created a new Stepney Borough Constituency identical in area to the Metropolitan Borough of Stepney. It was first contested at the 1950 General Election.

The Representation of the People Act 1970 redrew constituencies to align with the boundaries of the London Boroughs created in 1965. The area became part of the new Tower Hamlets, Stepney and Poplar Borough Constituency, first contested at the general election of Febuary 1974.
